Frequently asked questions

Is this the official test?

No. Life in UK Practice is an independent study aid. Our questions are original and are based on the handbook for the test, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition). For the test rules and fees, and to book the test, visit gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test.

What's free and what's included in Full Access?

Free: two full mock tests, a selection of practice questions from every topic, and the study notes for Chapters 1 and 2. Full Access unlocks every question, every mock test, unlimited random tests, all study notes and flashcards, the key dates timeline, and read-aloud for everything.

What are the Full Access plans?

There are three, and each one unlocks exactly the same Full Access:

Prices are for the UK and may vary in other countries; Google Play shows you the price before you buy. Payment is taken from your Google Account, with the payment method you use on Google Play, when you confirm the purchase. A subscription renews at the end of each week or month until you cancel it. There are no free trials.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Google Play. On your phone, open the Play Store app, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions, choose the Full Access subscription for Practice: Life in UK Test and tap Cancel subscription. You can also use Google Play's subscriptions page, or Settings → Manage subscription in the app.

You keep Full Access until the end of the week or month you've paid for, and you won't be charged again. Your progress stays on your phone.

Uninstalling the app doesn't cancel a subscription. If you switch to Lifetime, cancel your subscription too, so it doesn't renew.

How do I switch plans?

Between Weekly and Monthly: in the app, open Settings → Switch to Monthly (or Switch to Weekly) and confirm with Google Play. The change happens straight away: Google Play turns the value of the time left on your current plan into time on the new one, so you aren't charged again until that runs out.

To Lifetime: tap Settings → Switch to Lifetime and buy it. Google Play doesn't cancel your subscription for you, so cancel it as described above (you keep Full Access either way).

I bought Full Access but it's locked on my new phone

Open Settings → Restore purchases in the app (Settings is the gear icon at the top of Home), with the Play Store signed in to the same Google Account you used to buy it. This works for all three plans. Purchases aren't shared with family members through Google Play's family library. If you have more than one Google Account on your phone, switch to the right one in the Play Store app first, then try again.

I bought Full Access on an iPhone or iPad. Does it work on Android?

No, sorry. Purchases on the App Store and on Google Play are separate, and the app has no accounts to link them, so Full Access bought on an iPhone or iPad doesn't unlock the Android app, or the other way round. Your progress doesn't move between them either.

My purchase says it's waiting for approval

Some payment methods, such as paying with cash at a shop, take time to go through, and a family manager may need to approve a purchase. Full Access unlocks by itself as soon as Google Play confirms it. You can check the order in the Play Store app under Payments & subscriptions → Budget & history.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases and subscriptions are handled by Google Play, so refunds follow Google Play's refund policy. Shortly after buying (Google usually allows 48 hours), you can ask Google Play directly: open your order history, find the purchase and choose Request a refund or Report a problem. If it's been longer, email us and we'll look at it. To stop a subscription renewing, cancel it as described above.

Is my progress backed up?

Progress is stored on your phone and included in Android's backup to your Google Account, if backup is turned on (in your phone's Settings, search for "Backup"). It comes back when you reinstall the app or set up a new phone from your backup or your old phone. Your test date comes back with it, but reminders and other settings don't, so turn them on again in the app. Progress isn't synced between devices.

Reading aloud doesn't work, or the voice isn't British

The app reads with your phone's text-to-speech. For a British voice, install the English (United Kingdom) voice: open your phone's Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech output (on some phones it's under Settings → System → Languages, or search Settings for "text-to-speech"), tap the settings icon next to the preferred engine, such as Speech Services by Google, choose Install voice data and download English (United Kingdom).

If nothing is read at all, check that a text-to-speech engine is installed and selected on that screen (Speech Services by Google is free on Google Play), and that your media volume is turned up.

I'm not getting reminders

Reminders are notifications, so the app needs permission to send them. On Android 13 and later, allow notifications when the app asks, or later in your phone's Settings → Apps → Life in UK → Notifications. Some phones also hold back reminders to save battery: if they still don't arrive, set the app's battery use to Unrestricted under Settings → Apps → Life in UK → Battery. Reminders are set again by themselves after your phone restarts.

If reminders arrive, but late: on Android 14 and later, allow the app to set them on the minute. Open your phone's Settings → Apps → Special app access → Alarms & reminders (or search Settings for "Alarms"), choose Life in UK and turn on Allow setting alarms and reminders. Without it, Android may deliver a reminder up to an hour late.

How do I add a widget or use the shortcuts?

Touch and hold an empty part of your home screen, tap Widgets, find Life in UK and drag a widget into place: Test readiness shows your readiness, countdown and streak, and Question of the day lets you answer a question without opening the app. To use the shortcuts, touch and hold the Life in UK icon: Quick 10, Mock Test, Review Mistakes or Progress. They appear once you've opened the app.

I think an answer is wrong

Please tell us: tap "Report a problem" under the question's explanation, which starts an email with the question's details. We'll check it against the handbook. Note that the test follows the handbook, which was written in 2013. Where real life has changed since, the app shows a note explaining the difference.
